ARTH 4997 - Practical Field Training

This 1.0 credit course is intended for students who require enrollment in a credit-bearing course in order to participate in internships or other similar, field-related experiences. Most commonly, this will pertain to students on F-1 visas seeking Curricular Practical Training (CPT) authorization. CPT is temporary employment authorization that makes it possible for an F-1 international student to work off-campus if the work is directly related to an F-1 student's major area of study and has a curricular requirement.

Students not on F-1 visas but who still require credit-bearing courses to participate in internship experiences may also enroll in this course.

In order to enroll in ARTH 4997, students must:

  1. Obtain an internship offer and verify whether or not enrollment in a credit-bearing course is necessary for your participation.

  2. Email Professor Cohen-Aponte (aic42@cornell.edu) a copy of the internship offer letter and your expected graduation date. You must specify if you are requesting credit for CPT. The offer letter should include a job description of the work you will do.

  3. CPT STUDENTS ONLY: Submit the CPT application online through the International Services office. List Ananda Cohen-Aponte as the approver and aic42@cornell.edu as the approver email. Select "employment is required to earn credits for a specific class" as the curricular requirement to qualify for CPT.

    1. International Services will review your CPT application and your eligibility and email you to let you know the outcome and provide you with the updated I-20 work authorization.

  4. If you are approved for a fall or winter internship, Dani Vander Horst (dmv43@cornell.edu) will send you a permission code to enroll in ARTH 4997 the spring semester following your internship. If you are approved for a spring or summer internship, Dani will send you a permission code to enroll in ARTH 4997, which takes place in the fall semester following your internship. These courses are 1 credit, S/U grading option only, and require you to complete a written reflection on your internship submitted to the Professor Cohen-Aponte at the beginning of the semester you enroll in ARTH 4997.
