Leonardo Santamaría-Montero, PhD Candidate in the Department of the History of Art & Visual Studies, has published a blog post, “Images of the Miskito Kingdom,” in the British Library’s Americas and Oceania collections blog series. Developed from dissertation research conducted during his residency at the British Library in May 2026 as an Eccles Institute Visiting Fellow, the essay draws on 18th- and 19th-century books, maps, and printed images from the library’s collections to examine representations of the Mosquito Coast, a region on the Caribbean coast of Central America encompassing present-day Nicaragua and parts of Honduras. Through an analysis of maps and book illustrations, the post explores how the kingdom and the region were depicted in British and American print culture, revealing how visual representations contributed to the production and circulation of colonial knowledge about the Mosquitia and its inhabitants while reflecting broader political, commercial, and imperial interests in the greater Caribbean.
