Leyla Uğurer

Ph.D. Student in History of Art and Archaeology

Overview

Leyla Ugurer studies the art and archaeology of the ancient Mediterranean and Western Anatolia. Her research explores cultural interactions, the mobility of craftsmen, and artistic exchanges between West and East, as well as memory and identity in funerary art, while also engaging with theoretical and critical approaches to ancient material culture in Graeco-Roman art and archaeology.

Trained as a field archaeologist, Leyla has participated in excavations, including Haydarpasa Urban Excavation (Istanbul Archaeological Museums) and the St. James AME Zion Church Community Excavations (Cornell University). She has also been a member of the Archaeological Exploration of Sardis (Harvard University/ Cornell University). In addition to being a trench supervisor, she has conducted surface survey at the site. Furthermore, she has professional experience working at the Istanbul Archaeological Museums.

Leyla has dual BAs in English Language and Literature and Classical Archaeology (summa cum laude) from Istanbul University, along with pedagogical training from both Istanbul University and the University of Cambridge.

At Cornell, Leyla helps coordinate the History of Art Graduate Student Association, together with Anne-Solène Bayan.
